Union Grove Union High School bids a fond farewell to one of its most cherished employees, Karen Mutter, who retired in December after an incredible 28-year tenure, most recently serving as the Executive Administrative Assistant. Karen’s impact on our district is immeasurable, as she has been the steadfast support behind the Board of Education, District Administrators, and staff alike.
Karen’s journey with UGHS began long before her professional career. A proud UGHS Class of 1972 graduate, she discovered her passion for business courses, which laid the foundation for her impressive career. Karen excelled in business courses like typing, bookkeeping, and shorthand—skills she used extensively throughout her career. While still a student, she gained early work experience as a part-time bookkeeper and later as a key punch operator at SC Johnson, where she advanced to roles in cost accounting and administrative support.
Karen paused her professional career to focus on raising her family, during which she remained active as a PTO member, room mom, and accomplished baker, even creating wedding cakes as a side business. She returned to the workforce in 1990 as the District Secretary and Bookkeeper at Kansasville School, where she formed lifelong friendships and witnessed the growth of many young students. Her transition to Union Grove High School came in October 1996, where she initially served as the bookkeeper before assuming the role of Executive Administrative Assistant.
Over the years, Karen has been a witness to and an integral part of the school’s evolution. From helping oversee building renovations and groundbreakings to establishing the Bronco Hall of Fame, her fingerprints are on countless milestones. She’s worked under several district administrators, bringing calm, grace, and unparalleled efficiency to every transition. Her ability to “keep the storm at bay” has earned her a reputation as a trusted anchor within the school.
Her colleagues describe her as the “calm in the storm,” an “icon of UGHS,” and “the heart of the building.” Karen’s thoughtfulness has touched every corner of the school. Whether hosting the annual Christmas Open House, baking treats that brought smiles to staff, or offering a listening ear, she has exemplified what it means to go above and beyond. She’s been a workhorse behind countless events and a pillar of support for her colleagues, ensuring everyone felt seen, valued, and cared for.
Karen reflects on her career with pride and gratitude:
"I’m proud of what I’ve contributed to the success of this school and to those who lead it. This has been an amazing career, one I have cherished every day. I am a Bronco through and through. My husband, children, and now my grandchildren have all walked these halls, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for them."
In retirement, Karen looks forward to spending more time with her grandchildren, family, and friends, and finally diving into her long reading list. While her daily presence at UGHS will be deeply missed, her legacy of kindness, dedication, and community will continue to inspire us all.
Thank you, Karen, for 28 years of unwavering support and care.
